Daxueshan National Forest rises straight out of Taichung's back door, from subtropical foothills to cloud forest. It is famous among birders worldwide: Swinhoe's and Mikado pheasants walk the roadside at dawn, and barwings, sibias and laughingthrushes fill the canopy. This overnight ecotour pairs a naturalist guide with slow trails through thousand-year forests, a sunset above the sea of clouds, and some of Taiwan's darkest, starriest night sky.

    Day 1Foothills to cloud forest

    Wind up the 50 km forest road with birding stops at each elevation band. Afternoon giant-tree trail walk, sunset over the sea of clouds, night-sky session after dinner.

    Day 2Pheasants at first light

    Dawn on the forest road for pheasants and endemic songbirds, then Yakou lake trail before descending with a hot-spring or farm stop en route back to Taichung.

Do I need to be a birder to enjoy this?

Not at all — the forest, giant trees and stars carry the trip on their own. But bring binoculars and the birds will find you.

What language does the guide speak?

All tours are led in English by licensed local guides. Mandarin is available on request, and Japanese/Korean-speaking guides can be arranged for private groups with advance notice.

What happens if it rains?

Tours run rain or shine — Taiwan's mists are part of its soul. For typhoon warnings or unsafe conditions we will contact you to reschedule or refund in full.
