History in Taiwan rarely announces itself; it hides in courtyards and banyan-lined lanes. In Wufeng, the Lin Family Mansion and Garden — the finest surviving gentry compound from the Qing era — opens its stages, libraries and gardens to those who know to look. Down the road, Chung Hsing New Village was built in 1957 as the provincial capital, a Garden City experiment of roundabouts and hedges. When the province was dissolved, time stopped; today young makers are moving into its vacant dormitories. Walk both, and you walk a century.
